Last season, we saw the muslim designer Anniesa Hasibuan make history with the first ever collection at New York Fashion week featuring hijabs. The indonesian designer returned this season with a beautiful collection that dazzled in embellishment and an array of metallics.
This time however, it wasn’t just the hijabs again that were making headlines. Hasibuan debuted her collection with models who were first or second generation immigrants, an extra significant move after Trump’s controversial “Muslim Ban”.
‘This show was the opportunity to show that Islam is beautiful,’ the designer continues. “I believe everyone should be presented with equal opportunities, especially if he or she has passion, talents and skills, because not all immigrants are ‘bad’. We’ve proved they are beautiful and a great contribution to the States.”
“There is beauty in diversity and differences – something we should not be afraid of. I believe being a fashion designer can bring a lot of changes – and beautiful changes, of course.”
Since the worldwide praise for the first collection in September, Hasibuan has since opened new stores in Indonesia, Turkey, Abu Dhabi and Malaysia. We can’t wait to see what Anniesa has in store for the SS18 collection!
