Indian journalist Gaurav C Sawant was at the receiving end of twitter activists, who trolled him on his tweet about Triple talaq. He was trolled because he gave examples of two successful Hindu women and framed the challenges of triple talaq between them, Twitter had to remind him that Indian Muslim women have also achieved success both in and out of the country! His tweet enraged and annoyed both women and men due to the tone of suggesting Muslim women are oppressed. The wider debate was around the bias within India’s media also surfaced.
The hashtag #Muslimwomenachievers began and Indians celebrated Muslim women.
The journalist did try to calm Twitter activists by explaining he was merely quoting a victim and told them to watch the interview. None the less it seemedto have surfaced bias within India’s media and something that does need to be addressed. Reclaiming the narrative is a global problem that can lead to ignorance and a whole host of problems with society.
