The tragic and shocking events which played out last night in West London at the Grenfell Tower estate have left us all affected in some way.Whilst we all do what we can and continue to pray for those affected we see that once again Londoners come together in a time of need for fellow Londoners. We witnessed Churches, Gudwaras, Mosques and Community centers open their doors and welcome the victims in. We saw people of all faiths, no faith and backgrounds offer support and love to those affected. The community surrounding Grenfell Tower have also been affected as well as relatives in and out of London waiting to hear of loved ones who were trapped.

Amaliah were at Al-Manar mosque where Muslims and people of other faiths were donating as well as sorting items from water, nappies, clothes, toys and even sweets for children affected. We witnessed a van pull up outside Al-Manar and a young woman in jeans and a top walked towards the mosque and asked where supplies could be left, she hesitated to come in as she wasn’t sure if there was a dress code, she was welcomed in and directed. She was part of a group of young people who had travelled from Lancaster.

As we walked through West London, navigating our way to Al-Manar, we saw a group of Sikh brothers helping at the Local Church. The Ramadan tent volunteers were also out in full force to help those in need.

As we navigated the streets and tried to find our way around the blocked roads leading up to the mosque we saw a group of young Somalian boys all  walking down the road with Pizza’s, it’s only when we turned the corner we saw the Police and locals with slices of Pizza in hand, they were doing their part too.

Everyone was helping everyone. Whilst many of us try and control our social media usage Facebook and Twitter came alive and was used for good once again. People were offering rooms, setting up ad hoc collection points and asking others to inform them if loved ones were found yet. At a time like this, we need to stand together and know thy neighbor. We will be posting ways to help throughout the next few months. The victims and those who have lost people to this tragedy will need our support beyond today and tomorrow.
