NYFW saw Indonesian Muslim designers come together and take centre stage at NYFW for the second time, bringing abayas and hijabs to mainstream fashion.

Dian Pelangi has featured previously at NYFW and Vivi Zubedi debuted her collection for the first time at the Indonesian Diversity show.

Pelangi’s collection was inspired by ‘Humans of New York’ and the dynamic mix of personalities and the active hustle and bustle of the city. This came through her designs with the vibrant mix of prints including tie dye and the famous indonesian Batik technique.“We’re not oppressed and we just want to show the world that we still can be beautiful and stylish with our hijab on,” 26-year-old Pelangi told the Guardian.

Zubedi’s collection was called “Makkah, Madinah, Jannah” and this featured as a slogan on many of her designs. ″I love the US very much and I have a lot of clients here,” Zubedi said. “Hijab is beautiful, we are all still human no matter what religion you are. We are still the same.”
