Truck Bomb in Mogadishu Injures and Kills Over 500

The blast in Mogadishu, Somalia has injured over 500 people official reports claim which includes over 200 dead, the death toll is set to rise as rubble is cleared. Nearby buildings were demolished as a result and cars were also severely burnt beyond recognition. Loved ones have flocked to nearby hospitals to find their friends and family. Some of the dead were said to have been identified and taken for burial. The blast occurred in a busy area where foreign Embassies are located nearby.

The President of Somalia President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajohas ordered flags to be flown at half-mast and called on the citizens to help to

“…donate blood and comfort the bereaved.”

A committee has also be put together to help arrange national funerals and help those affected.

Turkeys Red Crescent Emergency response team were amongst the first to send help, aid has been flown into Somalia by Turkey and some of the critically ill are being flown back to Turkey for medical treatment. Amongst the dead are Somali locals, aid workers and volunteers for charities and reporters. Maryama Abdullahi was amongst the dead and was due to graduate as a doctor this weekend.

Tracing the missing

Somalia’s Leading Independent Radio station Dalsan Fm has also opened a hotline to help families trace the missing. Please share with any individuals who are looking for family.

Are raising funds which will be sent directly to the hospitals  for medical supplies to cope with the tragic attacks (via Sheikh Mohamed from Masjid Noor-al Islam in Cardiff) Donate now

Are helping a local voluntary group raise funds, the group are currently helping the families and victims affected.

  • A vigil was organised by Kings College Universities ISOC on the 17th of October at 17.30pm.
  • The UCL BME Students Network also  organised a Banner making session
