The Adhan App Panic in Public Is Real

by in Culture & Lifestyle on 28th March, 2018

Earlier this month we saw ‘Mooslemargh’ and ‘Yes I’m Hot in This’ come together to illustrate how real train track anxiety is for many Muslims. The illustration had a “Me too” effect where hundreds of Muslims felt a sense of relief in that they weren’t the only ones that felt a sense of panic when waiting for a train. In another illustration, this time by Yasmine Tangou @tango.art – we see how real the Adhaan app going off in public is real. Perhaps you’re at work, on the train or shopping and then “ALLAAH HU AKBAAR..” goes off, you scramble for your phone to put it off, meanwhile, everyone has noticed your scramble more than the adhaan.

“The call to prayer app comic was inspired by some events that actually happened to me, to my family and to my friends. I wanted to draw something cute that’s actually relatable”

– Yasmine Tangou

2. “ALLAHUAKBAR” – The moment of panic

It begs the question, what are we so afraid of? Perhaps it’s the conditioning by the media where the word Allahuakbar has been given negative connotations so that we feel it is something we should silence in order to not startle anyone. Have you felt the adhaan app panic?

Yasmine’s work often features Muslim women,

“With my art, I really want to be able to inspire others. I still am looking for my style, I want to be able to express my feelings and my thoughts with my art. I’m still learning to do that, as I am just self-taught. I started drawing to express what I couldn’t say with words. And I tried to improve in it.

I draw many Muslim women because I am Muslim and I’ve grown up in a society, in Italy, where there is no representation of Muslim people at all.
