An interesting, turn of events embroiled social media over the last few nights, as a debate was sparked between Muslims from the US and the UK. It was said to be triggered by an insulting and derogatory meme that went viral depicting a conservative Muslimah from the UK and a liberal Muslimah from the US.  The onslaught of Tweets that followed was from both comical and concerned spectators, surprised that Muslims should be debating such a futile topic with such vigour in the last few nights of Ramadan.  Many Muslim Twitter users found it hilarious, others got incredibly upset about how our Ummah is struggling, with our brothers and sisters dying, whilst we waste our time on Twitter debating identity. For other users, it was a serious debate in understanding how Islamic identity and geography do in fact correlate, highlighting that the reason we become so hurt by stereotypes is that somewhere bubbling beneath the surface there is, in fact, some truth to it.
