It’s International Coding Week: Here Is Your Starter Pack

Today is the start of #NationalCodingWeek. Yay!

This week will be jam-packed full of events hosted by schools, libraries and businesses across the country celebrating coding- which is amazing! If you’re a coding newbie or someone who recently got into tech, now is the perfect time to start learning about code and finding out about all the incredible things you can do with it.

To give you a kickstart, below we’ve created your very own coding starter pack full of helpful resources you can watch, listen or read.

What is code?

Code is a set of rules and instructions that we give a computer which bridges the gap between human language and computer language. Paul Ford created an amazing interactive piece for Bloomberg on what code is which is a highly recommended, enjoyable read.

Some other great reading includes:

Computational Fairy Tales Start learning about programming with the help of some dragons and princesses.

The Eloquent JavaScript- A more in-depth look at programming and Javascript.

FreeCodeCamp.org — They have some amazing blog posts on specific languages, tools, and processes as well as stories around becoming a developer, finding work, and doing meaningful stuff.

And some online places to learn how to code:

Codecademy — Learn for free through fun and interactive tutorials. They also have a pro version.

Rail Girls — Be part of an online community of women and learn sketching, prototyping and programming through their online guides.

TreehouseAn online school which offers lots of different interactive coding courses you can do from home.

Learn in person:

Code First: Girls — They’re on an important mission to increase the number of women in tech and run free coding workshops across the UK, and paid courses for professional women.

Makers Academy (London) — Learn to code and become a developer through their 12-week intensive course.

Founders and Coders (London) — Free 16 week full-time programme. Pay it back by mentoring the next cohort and working on projects with them.

Women in TechAn online community helping women working in/or are interested in tech through case studies, guides and advice blogs.

We Are Tech Women A round of up of news, events and career advice for women working in/or interested in tech — they have an awesome newsletter too.

DevelopHer They’re dedicated to bringing women in technology together to create both opportunities and a network of support through events, workshops, and learning.

Ada’s list- A group of 5000+ women who are dedicated to changing the tech industry. Their forums are a great way to meet new people and hear about exciting events and opportunities.

Code Newbie This podcast shares stories from different people about their coding journey.
