The Muslim Women Who Stole New York Comic-Con as the Muslim Avengers

People are in a slight frenzy over the ‘hijabi heroes’ that took over New York’s Comic-con this year from October 4th-7th. Not only this but there was also an all Muslim panel this year. For anyone who doesn’t know, Comic-con is a global event that is now 10 years old, it takes place each year in different cities around the globe, where people of all ages dress up in their favourite comic book character and meet the writers of these characters and each other. You don’t need much to get involved, it is open to the public, there is no invite-only clause, no documentation needed, passports or application forms, no discrimination of gender, colour, religion, or race. From a group of female Muslim avengers to a Muslim family of Star Wars characters, anime girls, hijabi batman, Muslim Dr. Who, to a hijab-clad captain America. The image of the fantastic event was shared my Maliha Fairooz on Twitter, whose initial image of the Muslim female avenger’s went viral.

Muslim women did not come to COSPLAY they came to slay!

Here at Amaliah, we were delighted to see so many Muslim women turn up in numbers dressed to the nines in FANTASTIC heroin getups since we know of SO MANY Muslim women that love to sketch, write, create, and read comic books religiously, mind the pun. There is a whole niche out there of Muslim female cartoonists, and graphic designers, but more than that an even higher number who spend time wanting to discuss their favourite plotlines, and characters on forums, and blogs. It even opened up more discussions surrounding the covering of the face, and how it only becomes dangerous when there are religious ties to it.
