Over this weekend thousands of people are taking to the streets around the UK and the world in a series of protests after the wake of George Floyd’s murder by police in America. The peaceful protests were a reminder that racism and anti-blackness are embedded around the world. Protestors reminded us that the UK has had many of its own cases of racism and injustice including Mark Duggan, Shukri Abdi, Belly Mujinga and the Grenfell fire. There were calls by rally speakers to challenge the structural racism in education and healthcare systems as well across industries like beauty and fashion, to name a few.
The peaceful protest on Saturday started off in Parliament Square and made it’s way to the Home Office. Kicking off the rally were drummers and chants of “I can’t breath”, “Black Lives Matter”, “George Floyd” and “No Justice, No Peace”. One of the speakers also led a minute of silence while protestors took a knee.
