Yesterday, American toy manufacturing company Mattel, has revealed it’s first ever Hijab wearing Barbie in honour of US Olympic fencer Ibtihaj Muhammad.
Ibtihaj, is an American sabre fencer, and is part of the United States fencing team. In 2016, she rose to fame as she became the first ever US Olympian to compete while wearing Hijab.
The doll is part of Mattel’s “Sheroes” collection, and is wearing full fencing gear, as well Hijab, and is created in Ibtihaj’s likeness. The doll, which is expected to be released online in 2018, was announced on twitter by Mattel yesterday;
We are so excited to honor @IbtihajMuhammad with a one-of-a-kind #Barbie doll! Ibtihaj continues to inspire women and girls everywhere to break boundaries. #Shero #YouCanBeAnything #GlamourWOTY pic.twitter.com/oV0e6ClgL6
