5 Tips for Qiyam Al-Layla: Night Prayer Can Continue After Ramadan

by in Ramadan on 14th June, 2018

1) Educate yourself

Knowledge is a powerful tool and in Islam, we are encouraged to know first before acting. The believer’s actions and speech are always preceded by intentions as Imam Malik mentions. So do your research, read about the guidelines and benefits of Qiyaamul Layl. This will serve as the first stepping stone.

2)  Make the intention

As with all deeds, intentions must be set right. Make a conscious intention and a resolution to begin for Allah and as a means of seeking nearness to Him and then, for all the benefits that come with it.

3. Talk to Allah about it

Always talk to Allah about your plans. Yes, even good deeds. Ask Him to guide you to the best cause, to help you to be sincere and make it easy for you to remain steadfast and be consistent.

4. Start small and build a routine

The best deeds with Allah are not those weighed in their Quantity rather, they are those with which we are consistent, no matter how little. Do not overburden yourself. Start with a few raka’ahs. Even two and then pray witr, recite some Quran and make Dua. If you find it difficult waking up in the last third, Perform your Qiyaam in the earlier parts of the night. Before you go to bed. If your intentions are set right,  Allah will reward you generously. Build a routine as you go and work towards Quality, perfect that and then build on Quantity.

5. Do not be stagnant

Set milestones: despite Quality overrides quantity, quantity also has its significance. We seek to improve ourselves constantly as Muslims and avoid stagnation. Set milestones for yourself. From 3 Raka’ahs once a week to twice a week, daily and then more Raka’ahs. From early parts of the night to waking up a few minutes before Fajr,  and then, some more until waking up for the last third is a breeze.

Whatever we do, sincerity is key, if you are determined, Allah will always make the path to Him easy for you. We ask Allah to make us most sincere in all that we offer to Him and make the months after Ramadan, a time in which we attain Allah’s pleasure. Ameen
