An exciting and innovative proposal attempting to tackle the issue of plastic pollution in London by Mayor Sadiq Khan has just been given the go- ahead. The scheme, which has been in the pipeline as part of a larger budget proposed to help reduce waste in the capital, will come to fruition this summer with water fountains being installed in areas of the city.
The initiative has been designed to facilitate a low-waste lifestyle, something that the Mayor has stressed is key to the safety of London as a living environment for its population of 8.7million people.

The fountains, which will be provided with the help of the Zoological Society of London are designed to encourage the use of re-fillable water bottles, significantly reducing the impact of disposable plastic packaging on the environment at large. While the exact locations of the fountains have not yet been confirmed, it’s likely that they’ll appear in high traffic areas of the city, such as Oxford Circus, where plastic pollution is often at its worst.

If successful, the scheme will expand significantly to ensure most areas of the city have access to the bottle-refill points.
The project’s network of drinking fountains will likely bring about a new set of social benefits and strength to a global collective conscience surrounding issues of waste pollution in recent years. More locally, Londoners can expect a fresh community experience that responds to an ever pressing environmental issue.
More importantly, it means we all have an excuse to go shopping for an aesthetic BPA-Free re-fillable water bottle…
