1) Cambridge Analytica the company at the heart of Facebook scandal collapses

What is it?

The company itself offers a service to political parties, and businesses who want to, “change audience behaviour.“Cambridge Analytica is the company at the heart of the Facebook scandal after it came to light that the company harvested over 50 million Facebook profiles, beaching the privacy of millions of Facebook users.

The firm was set up in 2013 and based in London, claims to combine and analyse large amounts of consumer data through consumer science to help identify people whose organisations can be targeted with the right marketing strategies and materials.   “It collects data from a wide range of sources, including social media platforms such as Facebook, and its own polling.” Founder, Alexander Nix said the reason it was set up was due to the ‘vacuum in the US Republican political market.”

So what?

The company has now collapsed, due to its very public drag through the media following Zukerburgs trial on Capitol Hill.

2) Noura Hussein to appeal her death sentence

Who is she?

Noura Hussein is a 19-year-old, Sudanese woman who was sentenced to death as a result of killing her husband after she was forcefully raped by him and his cousins. Her own father who forced her into the marriage, to begin with, took Noura to the authorities after she confessed to her family about the act she had committed in self-defence.

Whats going to happen?

Hussein’s supporters filled the courtroom in Omdurman, Sudan,  on Thursday, and overflowed into the hall outside, as the judge announced the penalty. Her husband’s family refused an option to pardon her and rejected financial compensation, requesting that she will face execution.

With 15 days to appeal the sentence, Yassmin Abdel Magied said,

“They are hoping to overturn the decision to execute Noura for defending herself against physical and sexual violence, and navigating an impossible situation that no young woman should ever face.” At Amaliah we encourage our readers, to raise awareness, make noise, campaign and help in any capacity.

3) Grenfell U-Turn

Whats the update with Grenfell?

Theresa May has had no choice but to allocate a panel for the Grenfell inquiry, since families and local community members based in West London have been applying pressure, in order for the survivors to gain some sort of accountability and justice. Campaigners have called for a diverse panel of experts, who will sit and judge the Grenfell tower fire, following pressure, as the inquiry was at risk of being whitewashed.

Theresa May said those appointed will have the “breadth of skills and diversity of expertise” to examine the reasons behind the disaster.

The blaze in West London that killed an amount no media outlet is revealing the true number of, on 14 June last year. The second phase of this inquiry will start with hearing evidence this month.
