Ted Talk: Finding Love in Arranged Marriages | Omar Durrani

by in Relationships on 5th June, 2018

Watch Omar Durrani a financial billing analyst and academy teacher, American born, and India raised. narrate his romantic yet hilarious story to finding love through arranged marriage. My mother said “think of your grandmother’s happiness”… after months of denial and deliberation I give in to another arranged meeting. My mother is a persistent woman, she gets a matchmaker, she finds a distant family member, who does matchmaking for a hobby. Mrs Fatima, who says “matches are made in heaven, I just bring the right people together”.

I was set to make a marriage bio-data, basically, like a cv is for employment base, this is what you call a marriage resume. You enter your education, your employment, age education, your family background, ambition, desires, what you look for in a woman, include pictures.

The matchmaker gives me a format she says follow this, with bullet points. I was going to write this story from the heart, I entail all those things make it funny and let my personality shine. After a week, I sent it to MrsFatimaa. My biodata becomes a hit, girls from all across the country are calling my matchmaker, I even get girls calling me from England, from Asia.  After months of this process, I am still a sceptic, I don’t find the one and I don’t think arranged marriages do actually work. Like my grandmother taught me I kept faith in God, I kept optimistic that somewhere out there my true love was out there. June 21s,t 2015 summer soltace longest day fo the ear, third day of Ramadan, my mother calls we have  the perfect proposal. Her name was a Ariba, she was beautiful.

I need to get to Chicago tonight, on your next flight, tonight I am meeting the woman I may marry tonight, please help me in the name of love. The lady says I don’thear that one very often, and quickly my bad luck turns to good luck she prints a ticket gives it to me, I skip a mile long line, I am set on this last flight to Chicago, mother nature plays her hand, and there’s a thunderstorm, another delay. I get there 7 hours later. I’m thinking there is no way she is going to say yes.

We were set to marry just a year after that.
