1. Ahed Tamimi released from Israeli prisons after 8 months

The teenager who was arrested with her mother 8 months ago, for ‘slapping’ an Israeli soldier, has said she will work towards becoming a lawyer, in order to further her fight for justice in Palestine. She is also passionate about ensuring that she pays tribute to her cause, with fervour since there are still so many women still incarcerated. The girl who has been deemed, ‘an icon of the resistance against Israel’ in the west bank, was just 16 years old when she was arrested.

“Of course I am very happy that I came back to my family, but that happiness is partial because of the prisoners who are still in prison…My happiness is not complete without my sisters [Palestinian female prisoners], who are not with me. I hope that they will also be free.”

2.  4 million stripped of citizenship in India

4 million people in the Northern-eastern state of Assam, could potentially lose their citizenship, due to a list The National Register of Citizens (NRC) which reflects all the people, “who can prove they came to the state by 24 March 1971, a day before Bangladesh declared independence.” The intention behind the list being revealed has been said to be a way to root out Bangladeshi immigrants from the country. Many are afraid violence will ensue against Assam’s ethnic minorities.

3. California deadly fire continues to blaze

6 people have died so far including two children and their great-grandmother. due to a wildfire that has only spread due to “Erratic winds” and dry conditions have caused the Carr fire to grow” early on Sunday in Northern California.  Thousands of firefighters are currently battling the fires to keep them at bay, it is one of eight major wildfires in the area so far.

4. First election since Robert Mugabe was ousted

Zimbabwe is buzzing, as people line up to vote for the first time since 1980 when Mugabe first came into power during the Independence. Many are deeming this to be a transformative moment for Zimbabwe, as it will mean moving away from an “oppressive rule.” The elections are said to be a close call between Emmerson Mnangagwa, who rules the Zanu-PF party and his main rival Nelson Chamisa who leads the MDC Alliance. Parliamentary and local elections will take place today, both parties are running for presidency. Mugabe, who was ousted from his position last November by Mnangagwa, with the aid of the military, has triggered an excitement across the region, in Domboshawa village, many had been queueing before sunrise.
